Upcoming Classes: Fall Schedule with Ivy Tech

I’m so excited to be teaching locally through Ivy Tech this fall. Please join me in one (or more) of these five classes. I would love to write with you.

Beginning Your Memoir
In a supportive group setting, begin preserving your true stories for yourself or next generations. Shawna Ayoub Ainslie, your facilitator, is an established local writing coach who specializes in writing joyful or difficult stories using expressive writing techniques and prompts. With her help, you will define your story and begin recording it while creating a sustainable writing practice. Bring your favorite writing tools and set foot on the path of writing discovery. Recommended texts: One Writer’s Beginningsby Eudora Welty, Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg.

Refining the Narrative
You have already begun drafting a longer work or collection and find yourself stuck. Maybe the telling of your story doesn’t feel quite right. Where do you go next? In this class, we will use generative writing practices and organizational tools to draft an outline for your work and create achievable goals toward its completion. You will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with instructor Shawna Ayoub Ainslie to address blocks and personal writing goals as well as strengths in your writing. Please submit a short description of your project prior to the first class session. Recommended texts: The Situation and the Story by Vivian Gornick, Love Warrior by Glennon Doyle Melton.

From Memoirs to Magazine Writing: How to Publish Nonfiction
Learn how to market your nonfiction book of essays, memoir or autobiography, or personal essays for magazines and online sites. This class will look at the requirements of different genres, as well as the business end: how to compose pitches and query letters and how to market yourself within a niche. You will have the chance to present pitches to the class for respectful feedback and to form relationships with other local writers. If you are serious about establishing an online presence, consider also taking Blogging Beyond the Basics. Recommended texts: On Writing by Stephen King.

Blogging offers a multiverse of writing options. Knowing your niche is essential to gaining and retaining readership. In this class, we will look at different components of what makes a blog successful, the advantages of blogging communities and exchanges (and how to create your own), avoiding common blogging pitfalls such as writer’s block, and fully locating our blogging voices. Participants should know how to set up a blog and be able to publish blog posts prior to joining this class.

She will guide you in creating an expressive writing practice so you can release your stories. You will have the option to share your work with the group, but privacy will be respected.
